Identifying signature strengths reduces challenging behaviour

Dr Martin E.P. Seligman and his team asked young students to discover what their ‘signature strengths’ were, in other words the character traits unique to them, through which they could continue to achieve positive outcomes in all aspects of their lives. For example, ‘I am patient, friendly, positive and kind’. The results demonstrated evidence for a reduction in challenging behaviour, better empathy for others and a higher degree of curiosity in lessons.

“All patients have opportunity to talk in confidence about worrying thoughts, feelings or behaviour. They are offered a 1:1 session with their allocated nurse at least once per day. We try to give them a choice of time and location for these sessions. Some young people have particular times of the day where their mood is worse or where they have more headspace, and some are just not morning people!”

“Sometimes staff find themselves flustered, irritated or anxious as a result of young peoples’ behaviour. We’re all human but we do our best to temporarily remove ourselves from the situation to unwind and reflect so not to exacerbated things. Then, we can find sensitive and therapeutic ways of feeding back our reaction to the young person.”
