The daily community meetings provide an opportunity for the young people to review their activities and “check in”. The practical and emotional stuff is attended to. Everyone is given the chance to say something within the boundaries held by staff. The meeting is really important because it can air and sort out tensions before they blow up. It’s not just nursing staff who attend – other parts of the MDT are represented. But we are always mindful about not outnumbering the young people!

Smooth transitions

Young people leaving the service have an agreed and documented discharge plan that supports self-management where possible, and explains how to access help if this becomes necessary. Where a young person is moving to another service, whether to adult mental health services or to a different service, staff ensure that the agreed transition protocol is followed. As a minimum, this will involve: a joint meeting between ward staff and the new service that includes the young person and/or parent/carer, and a written discharge summary, followed up after six months to check that the transition has proceeded smoothly.

An e-learning resource to help health visitors and school nurses improve their understanding of children’s needs

“We are developing a new e-learning resource to help health visitors and school nurses improve their understanding of children’s needs. It has six sections covering emotional wellbeing and mental health issues as well as looking at meeting the needs of children with additional health needs or disabilities.

The resource will be useful for the continuing professional development of both experienced and newly qualified health visitors and school nurses. It will contain information about best practice and self-assessment questions as well as links and suggested further reading for those needing more depth…

It has been created in a partnership between the Community Practitioners and Health Visitors Association (CPHVA), the School and Public Health Nurses Association (SAPHNA), Health Education England, E-learning for Healthcare and Public Health England.”

“Time to Shine”

The Wirral CAMHS Primary Mental Health Worker Team developed a skill-based, five-week Mindfulness Group. The group was originally called the Mindfulness Group, but the young people involved weren’t keen on this name and quickly renamed the group “Time to Shine”. The group started as a result of feedback we’d had from other young people that had been involved in our CAMHS service, who suggested there was lots to gain from meeting other young people in similar situations and having a forum of mutual support and understanding.  Having listened to the young people over four months, we ran two Mindfulness groups for any young person between 12-16 presenting with mild-moderate anxiety or low mood.

“This group is run fortnightly and is optional as it runs outside the unit’s therapeutic programme. The aim of the group is to facilitate direct action, through increased user involvement in all aspects of their care, treatment, issues relating to their environment and the resources we provide.

The group provides a forum for comments and complaints to take place, enabling the young people to be part of the process of change. Representatives of the young people, via the Young People’s Council, are invited to attend the monthly Simmons House Management Group meetings.

There is also a Food Steering Group which young people attend to discuss the quality and range of food available.” Read more here.

Young people’s emotional and intellectual growth is often affected

“Young peoples’ emotional and intellectual growth is often affected. Daily interactions on the ward, school work and the therapeutic programme is used to collect this information which is discussed in MDT ward rounds and management meetings. The delivery of the different levels of stimulation can then be tailored to the individual’s needs.”
