Ward building safety features: there is a safe, low stimulus garden as well as a garden with playground equipment. There is a soft room that is used for time out and physical containment of risky behaviour, but it is also used for fun and rough play. There are high handles to the doors to slow down young people who might be trying to run out of the building. All sharp objects such as knives are kept locked away and staff are continuously monitoring the environment for any item that might be dangerous.

A quiet non-stimulating room where they can’t find easily hurt themselves or others can be very helpful and calming.

Young people are encouraged to bring items from home to personalise their room; posters and photos are a good way to make this their own space and every room has a noticeboard where they can put these.

We have a separate dining room for young people who find meal times difficult.

Staff understand that it isn’t always easy for a young person to express themselves on a ward full of other young people. When needed, they are encouraged to have some alone time, to use the de-escalation room, have a walk in the grounds (permitting on their risk), or access the sensory or relaxation room. These all help them to be able to reflect on how they what they’re experiencing in a cathartic and productive way.
